Mike Modano is a retired American National Hockey League player. He has played for the Minnesota North Stars/ Dallas North Stars, as well as the Detroit Red Wings. In 2014, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and was later recognized as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players.

Mike Modano’s minor league career showcased his skills on the Western Hockey League team the Prince Albert Raiders. He scored a hat trick and was part of the WHL All-Star Team all within his first two years with the team. He was selected by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft and his NHL debut was in 1988 with the North Stars. For the 1989-1990 season, he scored his first league goal and was finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy. In 1992, Modano signed a four-year extension contract that made him the highest-paid member of the team, receiving million annually. The 1992-93 season had Modano at the best up to date, earning his first NHL All-Star Game invitation. Before the 1993-94 season, the North Stars moved to Dallas and became the Dallas Stars. With a fresh start, Modano was an idol in Dallas. He sold the most jerseys and received the most letters. Modano led the Stars to win the Central Division championship during the 1996-97 season and the 1998 Stanley Cup finals. In 1999, the Stars won the Stanley Cup, and Modano assisted on the Stars’ final five goals. From 1996-2002, Modano averaged 78 points and was one of the league’s top forwards in plus/minus over that period of time. His career high for points in a game is six and he has seven career hat tricks. On March 17, 2007, Modano scored his 502nd and 503rd career regular-season goals for most goals scored by an American-born player. On November 7, 2007, Modano scored a record-breaker goal being a short-handed goal on a breakaway, against the San Jose Sharks, earning him the league’s all-time record for most points scored by a U.S. born player. That was a special moment for America, as Modano received praise from Air Force One and U.S. President George W. Bush for his NHL record. In 2010, Modano signed a single year contract with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring with the Dallas Stars, after a one-day contract allowance from the team, in 2011. He was the last active player to have played during the 1980s and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and was named as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017.
